P2P

  1. What is file sharing?
File sharing is the potential to transfer files from one device to another. Two programs most students use that are also file sharing programs is Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive. These programs allow you to share big files, store in the cloud, sync, and collaborate with others.

2. What is P2P File sharing?

P2P (peer to peer) file sharing is when there are people uploading files and others are downloading. There are two requirements for P2P file sharing, internet connection and a P2P software such as Napster, etc.  Although P2P is great, piracy and illegal music downloading is common.

3. What are some examples of P2P file sharing?
Napster, a program where people upload songs so others can download for free is an example of P2P file sharing. Napster, a program first of its kind, was popular not only because it was free but because there were no music labels selling music online in 1999. In the article, Choi/Perez mentions "Consumers would have been willing to pay for a service with such collection of beneficial features, as Apple’s iTunes later proved". I have never used Napster but I recall there was another P2P file sharing program called Limewire (Also Frostwire) in the early 2000's.

A new media that doesn't exist yet.. maybe McGraw Hill Connect mobile app.. that actually works. Currently the McGraw Hill Connect mobile app doesn't allow students to read or do assignments on their phone. As a student, I'm always on the go and sometimes when your traveling you find opportunities where you can read or answer a few homework questions to keep busy. Their current app does nothing.

Social networking

Social networking is useful in many ways. It can be used to communicate with friends or meet new people (on Instagram and Facebook), make yourself known to employers (on LinkedIn), and advertising your business for free (again on Instagram and Facebook). According to the article “Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting”, Maureen Crawford-Hentz, recruiter for Osram Sylvania, stated ”Social networking technology is absolutely the best thing to happen to recruiting — ever.” Although social media has its positive effects, there is definitely a dark side to it. People make fake accounts and pretend to be other people (as seen on MTV’s Catfish). There’s also cyberbullying where people bully others through their keyboards. Privacy is also a concern. According to the article “Who cares about Facebook Privacy? Students Do”, Researchers Danah Boyd and Eszter Hargittai stated “Over all, our data show that far from being nonchalant and unconcerned about privacy matters, the majorit...

Blog v Wiki

Blogs are usually personal while Wikis are collaborative. Convergence is important in today's networked world because it allows more than one person to contribute their knowledge on a topic. In the article "How To Use Wikis For Business", it states "Wikis are designed to facilitate the exchange of information within and between teams." Blogs can be used for collaboration just like Wikis. In the article, "What motivates Wikipedians?", Nov mentions Wikipedia is a prominent example of a collaborative user generated content outlet based on the open source model, and a promising model for knowledge sharing". With that being said, more than one person can post on a specific blog making it collaborative. As of right now, I'm still thinking of a new use for Wiki.
